“Avis vs Hertz”

For the numerous times I have rented cars, in countless cities I have had occasion to travel, I can’t remember ever using Avis or Hertz rent-a-car agencies. That being said…I like their jingles: Avis: “We try harder” and “Let Hertz put you in the driver’s seat.”

Either one depicts the woefully inadequate abilities and conditions of human beings to save themselves, which is most glaringly stated in the original Humanist Manifesto as: “ Humans are responsible for what we are or will become. No deity will save us; we must save ourselves.” Human beings, since our first parents (in the Garden of Eden), want to do things their way. They want to be as Hertz says, “In the driver seat” and when that accident happens, “We try harder” the next time and the next.

Our Nation’s Birth Certificate contains the clause of Thomas Jefferson:  “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal and endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”  Had God written that, He would have added one unalienable truth…that all men cannot rightly govern without God.

Yet, here we are.  Sitting in the driver’s seat, trying harder and harder and harder…all the while pushing Deity aside as though He were Ebola. And if Dr. Phil could chime in he would say, or I will say for him: “How’s that working for you?”

We simply cannot afford to do anymore of our life without God, namely the Lord God of the Sacred Script.
