“The great and awesome God, is among you” (Dt. 7:21); “He is your God , who has done for you these great and awesome things” (Dt. 10:21); “that you may fear this glorious and awesome name, THE LORD YOUR GOD” (Dt. 28:58); “How awesome are Your works” (Psa. 55:3); “He is awesome in His doing toward the sons of men” (Psa. 66:5); “…men shall speak of the might of Your awesome acts” (Psa.145:6). “For the Lord Most High is awesome; He is a great King over all the earth” (Psa. 47:2); People of the Book say: “… my heart stands in awe of Your word” (Psa.119:161).
The message is pretty simple today…that which is connected to God is defined/described as awesome. It seems to me, any usage of the word “awesome” associated with people diminishes the word. We hear so often…that was an awesome movie, that was an awesome book, that was an awesome dinner, that was an awesome performance, and what an awesome game. Then when we are in the community of believers, we say God is awesome! Hmmm! I am sorry…I simply cannot put movie, dinner, performance, game, in the same status as God.
What an awesome game that was…and how awesome is our God, to me dilutes the weight of the word. King James translates the same Hebrew word as “reverend”. The Psalmist said: “He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant forever: holy and reverend is his name” (Psa.111:9). Now that is awesome! Perhaps now you have more an idea why I cringe when someone attaches “reverend” to my name when “holy and reverend is His name”.
Am I being a little too fussy, choosy, and fastidious? Perhaps! But I would rather error on the side of caution, and stay clear of the lightning strikes. LOL!
