This may surprise you, but honor is no light thing. Literally…for among others, the word honor is translated “heavy, weighty.” That is no light thing indeed! In fact, “honor” to mothers is the same word translated “glory,” connected to God Himself.
It would seem then, that to dishonor our mothers would in effect be dishonor to God. Ouch! As babies, the first human we meet and are joined with in vital relationship, is our mother. Initially, our mother is the first representative of the “glory of God!” She is clothed in the glory of God! Maybe that’s what we mean when we say there is something very beautiful or radiant in the countenance of a pregnant woman.
On the stingy side of “honoring” mothers, we also get to experience what the Apostle Paul says is the first commandment with promise: “That it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth” (Ephesians 6:3).Who among us wants to live well and long on earth?
One final point about the glory of Mothers, and believe me I worked this one to the max with my mother: “Mother is one to whom you hurry when you are troubled.” (Written by Emily Dickinson, the poet.) Well said Emily!
I love you Mom!
